Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) was one of the best-known Swiss symbolist painters of the 19th century. Known for his genre paintings and landscapes, Hodler adopted a personal form of symbolism which he called "parallelism", the repetition and symmetry in nature. Moving towards expressionism and a renewed interest in colour, his work became more and more pared of detail, verging on Abstraction.
