It depicts a German coastal landscape in the naturalist style prevalent in northern Europe in the 1930s. The painting's broad, expressive but restrained brushstrokes express the artistic approach favoured by artists from this region during this period, favouring landscape themes, already somewhat distant from 19th-century bucolicism.
